Introduction

The Historical and Educational Museum India Vanuíre, Tupã (SP), an institution of the Secretariat of Culture, Economy and Creative Industries of the State of São Paulo, was created in 1966 by Luiz de Souza Leão in the context of the implementation of the network of Historical and Educational Museums in the state of São Paulo.

We owe to Luiz de Souza Leão the definition of the two thematic axes of the Museum – local history and ethnography. Today, after museological updates, the axes intersect to problematize the territory where the institution is located, explore the constructions of memories of its inhabitants, both indigenous and non-indigenous, and exercise social and educational functions based on democratic and intercultural principles.

The Historical and Educational Museum India Vanuíre is a local institution that dialogues with the global, contributing with its specific and unique issues. It is realized through various curatorial actions, with an emphasis on communication through exhibitions and educational actions.

The museum is housed in its own building constructed by its founder. After a building renovation and museological requalification, the museum reopened in 2010 with a modern long-term exhibition that highlights the intercultural vocation of the museum and its role as a promoter of tolerance.
